![]() This is where you’re looking to “make a play” by successfully securing an expansion, denying your opponents expansion, or preferably both. In my opinion, the mid-game in Tooth and Tail begins when both players have taken all 8 farms in their main base and thrown down their core composition warrens. Mid Game: The mid-game is generally when the opening build orders have run their course and the results of the early game are being felt. The early game is defined by either aggressive (cheese) openings, economic (greedy) openings, or safe (midrange) openings. You gain this meta knowledge through experience playing the game, watching tournaments, and online guides such as this one.Įarly Game: The early game is, well, the beginning of the match. For example, knowledge that your opponent could perform a 3 - mole rush and that it is currently popular to do so is considered knowledge of “the meta”. This knowledge comes from content outside of the game map itself. Meta: Meta is best described as knowledge you have about the current trends of the strategies deployed in the game. You need to constantly be aware of what your opponent is doing and make adjustments to your own build order based on theirs. Scouting: Scouting is absolutely crucial in any RTS game. This is essentially your plan going in the game - and it’s extremely important to have a plan! Are you going to rush early? Prepare yourself for a strong mid-game push? As you play matches of Tooth and Tail, remember the order you built your structures and iterate it based on experience. ![]() Cheeses are typically not as effective in higher skilled games, but they can still be utilized if the cheese is concealed properly.īuild orders: A build order refers to the timing and sequence you place your buildings down. Cheeses can be frustrating to play against and can net the cheeser some easy wins. With a cheese, you’re trying to surprise your opponent with an attack when they aren’t prepared for it. ![]() However, if you make a mistake controlling your fox, or if your opponent makes a good play with his micro and kills your fox, then your opponent is put into a fantastic position to win the game.Ĭheese: Cheese, also called an “all-in”, is a build that focuses on winning in the early game. The fox is a great example of an “extreme” micro unit: In the hands of a skilled player with good micro, the fox is arguably overpowered. Some examples of micro control in this game are:ġ.) Target-firing enemy units to win small engagements.Ģ.) Positioning your pigeons behind your front line a bit as they tend to fly forward of your other tier 1 units.ģ.) Inching your ferrets forward to destroy defensive structures without your army taking damage.Ĥ.) Using the Fox (my favorite: yes, I’m that guy) to poke at the enemy. Micro: refers to managing your units efficiently to gain more value than what would be possible if the unit was simply controlled by its default AI. This maximizes how quickly you can obtain units and grow your economy. An example of good macro is to never let your money get too high - as soon as you have exactly enough food for a farm or warren, build it immediately. ![]() Macro: Macro refers to producing buildings, units, and more economy at your base effectively. You can zoom out and even see the whole map at once. Watch your replays: Did you get rolled over in a match and are wondering what just happened? Watch your replay! The replay system in this game is pretty great and replays will give you direct feedback to adjust all aspects of your gameplay. The fun of an RTS game is perfecting your own strategy over time using iterations and experience. Instead, when you lose, think about what you did wrong that match and how to correct it for next time. Those thoughts don’t help you grow as a player or have more fun. Try to avoid thinking things like “this unit is overpowered”, or “the map was in the opponent’s favor”. It’s okay if you lose, don’t worry about it! Try not to fall into a “tilted” attitude and remember it’s just a game and you’re playing to have fun. Who cares what rank you are? You’ll find a match within 15 seconds and get to play, even at odd hours. Practice against a training dummy computer and just challenge yourself to spend all your food as often as you receive it to build up your macro.ĭon’t be afraid to hop into ranked: The best way to play Tooth and Tail online right now is to hop right into ranked mode. You should never be floating more than 60 food in the early game. Spend all your money: The most important thing in an RTS game is to keep producing stuff because the larger army almost always wins. Story mode is very well done in this game and I had a fun experience playing it! It teaches you the core mechanics and familiarizes you with all the different units. Play the campaign first: The story mode is essentially a tutorial for the game.
